  • Wonder Pants

    Meet Emrie.  She is cute, really, really cute.  When she was born she had tons of black hair and chubby cheeks.  Her name is Emrie Rose.  So, we think of her as our rose.  We love her.  We really really love her. 

    All of that to say that she has cried since she was born.  No exaggeration.  She cried all the time and even now at 3 yrs she cries a lot.  I remember the pediatrician saying, "we can give her something if it will help you".  The pediatrician knew that she cried all the time because she cried the hardest when we were at her office.  Until she turned three, I joked that taking Emrie to the doctor was like taking a wild cat to the veterinarian. 

    Now I tell you all this because she can't read and when I do let her read this, we will laugh because of the way she "use" to be.  It still amazes me how different children can be.  Brian and I have our own little science experiment going on.  We are going to have ten or twelve children just so we can see how different they'll be (I'm kidding, maybe we'll have ten or twelve).  

    Anyway, Emrie has always wanted to stay a baby.  When it was time to crawl, she didn't want to.  When it was time to walk, she didn't want to.  When it was time to give up her blankie, she didn't want to,  When it was time to stop sucking her thumb, she didn't want to. When it was time to go potty, she didn't want to.  We had to do lots of enticing, begging, and threatening  persuading. 

    I said all of that to tell you, we have an Elmo potty DVD.  She still likes to watch it.  So, today she comes to me and says, "Mommy, Elmo has wonder pants."  My response, "Mmmmm.  That's nice."  "No, Mommy Elmo has woooonnnnndddder pants.  Come see, Mommy." 

    Wonder pants?  After watching Elmo for a moment, I realized that wonder pants were indeed underpants.  I assured Emrie that she has lots of underpants.  "But Mommy, Elmo says that Big Girls wear underpants and I'm not a Big Girl."  "Oh, yes Emrie, You are a big girl."  "No, Mommy I'm a little girl."  Cautiously and trying to be diplomatic I said, "Well, little girls wear underpants and big girls wear wonder pants." To which Emrie replied with much relief, "OOOHH!  OK!"
