  • Man of Sorrows

    It's a dreary title, isn't it?

Lately, I find myself overwhelmed by the deep loss and deep grief so many endure.

Isaiah 53:3, "He was despised and rejected--a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care."

All through Jesus' childhood, and even as an adult, he was pursued by nasty remarks about his birth, rumors that he was an illegitimate son, born to a woman who was thought to have broken her vow to her fiancee. His brothers misunderstood him and did not believe in him. They were embarrassed at some of the things he said and did. It was not until after the resurrection that they believed in him.

He was called a drunkard and a glutton, and was said to be possessed by a devil. He was called a Samaritan, a disparaging term. He had no home to go to. He said himself, "Foxes have holes, birds have their nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head," (Matt 8:20, Luke 9:50).

But, as great as the woes of our Redeemer were, they are all over now and are to be looked back upon in triumph! However severe the struggle, the victory has been won!  Our Savior is no longer in Gethsemane agonizing, or upon the Cross dying!

He is a Man with hands full of blessing, eyes wet with tears of compassion, lips overflowing with love and a heart melting with tenderness!  It is in his blessings, his compassion, his love, and his tenderness that I place my sorrows.
