  • Homemade Baby Wipes

    Lovin' these!

Homemade wipes work great.  They're a little thinner than the wipes I'm use to.  Even still, one wipe goes a long way.  They definitely get the job done.

The recipe came from the book, The Duggars: 20 and Counting! by Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar.  I love this book!  But just like all recipes, I've tweaked it to my liking.

Cut a whole roll of Bounty or Viva paper towels into two halves.  (Brand name counts.  The cheapies will be a disaster.)  Use an electric knife for best results.  I don't have an electric knife so hubby helped me and we made do.

Place one of the halved rolls vertically in an empty and thoroughly cleaned one gallon ice cream bucket.  Depending on the size of your paper towel roll you will want to adjust the recipe.  For a large 100 sheet or more roll use the following measurements.  Reduce for a 50 sheet roll.  In a jar mix 2 cups water, 2 tablespoons baby oil, and 1/2 tablespoon rubbing alcohol.  The Duggars said one tablespoon of baby bubble bath is optional.  I add it.

Pour the liquid over the halved roll of paper towels in the ice cream bucket, and soak for thirty minutes.  Remove the cardboard center.  Feed the top corner from the center of the paper towel through the X-shaped slit you've cut in the lid of the ice cream bucket so you can pull out and tear off one "wipe" at a time.

  • That is great.  Can't wait to see what the savings are.  And I am going to amazon to look for that book too.  By the way I am addicted to your blog.

  • Me too...about the addicted part!  I will be anxious to see what the savings are as well on these.  We don't really have "poopie diapers" anymore, but we use baby wipes still all the time!

Does the Duggar book have tons of good stuff in it?

  • @tgarrett2 - @Stacie - The book is a really fun read!  They have lots of recipes and tips.  It is mostly their story.  They said they wrote it so that future generations would know how God has blessed them.  It's sooo good!

You can get it at Amazon for $10.87 plus free shipping.  Of course, mine will be available for loan soon.  If you'd like to borrow it.

My guesstimate on the baby wipes is $1 to $1.50.  I'll get the exact numbers soon, though.

  • I make my own baby wipes too but i make 1/2 a baby wipe container at a time (I have 2 little ones in diapers).  I use soft paper towels....like Viva, but my husband gets these wholesale through his work.  We cut them in half so they stack nicely in the wipes container.  I then add very warm water with a couple tablespoons of baby soap and a tablespoon of baby oil.  No alcohol.  They work great!

If I run out and someone needs changed, I just  grab a couple paper towels, dampen them and add baby soap...still work great!

  • @laura - I wondered about Viva papertowels.  They are super soft.  I will give them a try.  My wonderful husband changes many diapers and he prefers the homemade to the store bought.  They really are good baby wipes.

  • Have you done a book review on the Dugger's book? Would I find helpful info even though my children are raised and gone from the home? Like frugal tips?

  • Just checking to make sure you use bubble bath and not baby shampoo? The small bottle in the picture looks like baby shampoo. I hope to buy the products tomorrow and give it a go.

  • @georgene - I've used both.  Baby shampoo or baby wash.  One worked as well as the other.  The night I made the pictures, I only had baby shampoo on hand.  I price checked the baby wash because that is what the recipe calls for.  Hope that helps.  The Duggar book does have frugal tips and recipes but it is primarily their story.  It is a very good read!

  • Hi all!! I just subscribed to Trent Tribe. I'm 10 minutes away from trying the homemade wipes (they are soaking in the container as I type). My little lad is 4 months old and although I love the store-bought wipes, they can really add up price-wise. Plus, I will be moving to a country in West Africa sometime next year, where wipes are non-existent or at best very, very expensive. So I am very thankful for this recipe as I can get my little one (and myself) used to them now. Thanks a million! By the way, I too love the Duggars and I bought their book but I haven't read it as yet. I have already tried their tatertot casserole (but I use hashbrowns and more spices and mixed veggies) and their oatmeal cookies recipes - yummy!!!

    Blessings,

  • @Kyeismum - You can also make up a container of the solution and use reusable cloths as wipes.  If you are ever without papertowels.  You will enjoy the Duggar book.  :)

  • You read my mind! I was thinking about the cloth option. I will have to give them a try as well as I have loads of washcloths and this would be less expensive in the long run than paper towels. So far, I am loving the wipes I made last night. I find it's like giving him a mini bath each change - probably because of the baby wash give them much more moisture than the store-bought wipes. I only had a store-brand paper towel roll at home at the time I tried it but now that I know I like them, I will buy the Bounty or Viva (or other more absorbent) towels.

One question about the cloth wipes, how does one manage with cleaning them? Do you soak the dirties in a container for awhile and then wash as usual? Thanks again for the tip on the cloth wipes!

    Blessings, Kyei's mum

  • I made these.. theyre great!!! I actually used a plastic Foldgers canister and it works perfect!!!!

  • @plvz1025 - That's very kind of you.  I'm glad you found something useful.
