  • Enthusiastic Frugal-ness

Eating out is expensive.  Avoiding the restaurant is the obvious way to save.

Occasionally, we enjoy a dinner out.  One of the easiest ways to save at the restaurant is to drink water.  With a family of six this is usually a $7 or $8 savings.

Sometimes our kids are less than enthusiastic.  Tea and Soda are rather tempting.  So to help them be enthused and save us money, we now offer to reward them with a quarter if they cheerfully order water.  We still save and I love that they are enthusiastic. (Three kids = three quarters.  The lil' guy is still too small to know the difference.)

I absolutely have no problem demanding they drink water.  If I insist, they'll comply.  But $0.75 is a smidgen reward.  They know that ordering water saves the family money and they reap an instant benefit.

We are gonna drink the water anyway, lol.  We've just found a way to make it more fun!

  • i actually got made fun of by friends for ordering water at a restaurant.  it didn't seem to matter that i was ordering a $13 entree.  i was still consider cheap.

  • I'll order a drink once in a while, but we mostly go for water, too. Eating out is a very rare treat. Frankly, I don't want to fill up on bubbles, I want to have room for my food. It's often just my husband and me since the kids are mostly grown up now. And we have such good water around here. You are so right to avoid soda, etc., considering they charge for a glass what you could get for a whole two liter bottle!

  • @Brooke - Instead of "cheap", insist it's for health.  lol

@mom2fur - So true, a 2 liter is cheaper.  Occasionally, we go to Pizza Hut and we purchase a 2 liter (they sell them for "to go" orders) and we ask for cups of ice. As of yet, the waitress cheerfully complies.
