Home Remedy for Cold Sores
Repost from Feb, 08
(The chief had a cold sore this week and we zapped it with this home remedy. Reminded me how well it works. Just spreading the word. )
If you've ever had a cold sore/fever blister - you know how miserable it is. You are gonna love this home remedy!
As soon as you feel the cold sore coming on (the earlier, the better), hold a cotton ball saturated with rubbing alcohol on it for about a minute. It will sting. Just a little. The cold sore will not get any bigger. I'm serious. The alcohol zaps it or something more medically technical.
Just for good measure, I do the alcohol a couple more times over the course of the day and the following day. I really don't like sores. So, I'm not taking any chances.
I've been told that the alcohol kills the cold sore germ. Preventing the cold sore from getting bigger. It is also suppose to prevent it from being contagious. Who told me this? I wish I could remember.
All I know for certain is that it works for me.

I am so excited! I usually take Valtrex (um, yes, that's right) orally and then use Denavir topically. That usually knocks a big one out in 48 hours, but I will love to try your alcohol idea.
I won't say, "can't WAIT" to try it, but you know what I mean.
Thanks!
What?! I have never heard this and we have suffered so much with these darn things. Thanks for the tip! Lisa~
I wish I would have heard about this tip two weeks ago! Thanks for sharing it!
very intersting I know when they are coming on but never knew this trick will have to try it thanks
My family always used hydrogen peroxide... I wonder if they have the same effect?
I get a TON of cold sores every winter, so I will give this a try! Thanks for the tip!
@papua2001mk - I bet so!
Great tip! My husband gets cold sores 2-3 times per year and they seem to last a long time. The abreva is so expensive too. I'll have him try this next time.
I can't remember where I heard it (oh, yes I do. Laine's Letters)... she found out that tomatoes cause cold sores. I told a family member and she tested and found out the same thing. If she eats pizza or spaghetti sauce she will break out with one. I wonder if that works with everyone?
Love you!
@georgene - Ours seem to accompany colds. Husband and I usually have only one or two per year. The rubbing alcohol works well.
Wow! I get these and they are killer! I take L lysine for the infection...it helps too.
Going to try this next time!
