"Our family members will carry the atmosphere we create
in our homes for the rest of their lives."We were so excited to go home to Virginia for a few days recently. We wanted to hug on our grandmother, parents, brothers, sisters-in-law, our nieces and nephews who just keep growing and growing, and our friends. We wanted to catch lightning bugs, roast marshmallows, breathe deeply the mountain air, and eat at Pizza Town (of course). We were delighted to visit our Virginia church. As always we were warmly received, hugged, encouraged, fussed over, and oh so blessed! The only things lacking were our aunts, uncles, cousins, the friends we didn't get to see, and more time! Sound exhausting? Only in the absolutely most fun way imaginable!
We had so much fun that we left the camera in it's case and didn't pull it out even once. Not. Even. Once. The only snapshots are in my mind and how beautiful and glorious they are. It's really too bad I can't share them with you.
When we go home, we usually stay with a different family member each night. I'm always amazed at how the atmosphere changes with each home we stay in. It is a great reminder to me that we truly do create the atmosphere in our home. The most important ingredient is love. Followed by our family's values. The homes we stay in are overflowing with both.
"Create a home you love to live in."
As homemakers we have the most important and creative task. We are to create an atmosphere that our children will carry with them forever. It will frame the rest of their lives. It will be their point of reference. Sounds, smells, and other senses will invoke memories from their childhood that will never be forgotten. Let's make the most of this opportunity. Moment by moment. Day by day.

I'm reading a book by Donna Otto called "Finding your Purpose as a Mom: How to Build your Home on Holy Ground." Since i'm not a mom i'm just reading it for interests sake, but the chapter I just read was exactly about the kind of home you create and how it will be remembered and thought of by those around you. thank you for sharing this. I was particularly struck by your statement: the atmosphere changes with each home we stay in. growing up i've been in many friend's home and there are a couple that i adored so much...and didn't want to leave. there is one in particular that when i enter their home i feel like i'm 'home' its a nice place to be.
I so agree! I'm going back home in a week - to my parent's house. This post will have me really thinking hard about what my children will carry with them into their adult lives - how it will help create the atmosphere they want people to feel in their own homes. I believe the atmosphere in our house is love, laughter. . and food!
Anyone and everyone that knows us knows they will get fed in our house!
@mytoesareblue - I'm going to look that book up, sounds interesting!
@mytoesareblue - Love Donna Otto! When the time comes, you will be a great mom! @fourkidsonemom - Have fun going home! Food is an important part of the atmosphere. Some dear friends of ours shared how that their teenagers and friends always hung out at their house because they had the best food. Whatever works, right?
