devotions

  • Impress Them

“These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.  Impress them on your children.  Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.  Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”  Deuteronomy 6:6-10

I've heard it said that the days are long and the years are short.  Looking at my oldest daughter makes that statement ring true!  Realizing just how little time I get with our children brings things quickly into perspective.  My husband and I only have a short time to teach them what we want them to know.

When we read Deuteronomy 6:6-10, we realize that devotions for ten minutes before bed time somehow isn’t going to be enough.  Deuteronomy directs us to impress these commandments upon our children.  Impress means to astonish or overwhelm.

If I am to overwhelm my children with these commandments then I must talk with them at home, when we are driving down the road, when we prepare for bed and when we rise and prepare to start our day.  I must have my bible in my hands.  I must read it to them.  Let them see me reading it.  I must use the bible in my language by making references to it throughout the day.  When I’m faced with decisions or they are faced with decisions, I must reference aloud what the Bible says in regard to that decision.  I must display God’s word in my house.  I must encourage the children to think of God’s word everyday throughout each day.

We are excited about the opportunities God lays before us.  Most of all, we are focused on overwhelming, astonishing, and impressing our children with these commandments.

  • Whiter Than Snow

     winter-7j7d

Lord Jesus, I long to be perfectly whole; I want thee forever to live in my soul, break down ev'ry idol, cast out ev'ry foe--Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.

Lord Jesus, look down from Thy throne in the skies and help me to make a complete sacrifice. I give up myself and whatever I know--Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.

Lord Jesus, for this I most humbly entreat; I wait, blessed Lord, at Thy crucified feet. By faith, for my cleansing I see Thy blood flow--Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.

Lord Jesus, Thou seest I patiently wait; come now and within me a new heart create. To those who have sought Thee Thou never saidst "No"--Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.

Whiter than snow, yes, whiter than snow--Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.

    Hymn by James Nicholson

"Dear friends, do you think you'll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? For instance, you come upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved and say, "Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!" and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup—where does that get you? Isn't it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?

I can already hear one of you agreeing by saying, "Sounds good. You take care of the faith department, I'll handle the works department."

Not so fast. You can no more show me your works apart from your faith than I can show you my faith apart from my works. Faith and works, works and faith, fit together hand in glove."

    James 2:14-17 (The Message)

  • Reaching

Our lil' guy asked me during church on Sunday, "Daddy's reaching?" (He has trouble with his Ps)

Something tells me that daddy prefers reaching to preaching, anyway.

  • Joseph and His Ephraim

Joseph named the firstborn Manasseh, "For," he said, "God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father's household."  He named the second Ephraim, "For," he said, "God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction."  Genesis 41:51-52

A familiar story.  Joseph, sold into slavery by his own brothers.  Working in the home of Potiphar.  Betrayed by Potiphar's wife.  Wrongly convicted.  Imprisoned.  But how things change...  Through an interpretation of a dream, God placed Joseph before Pharaoh.  Joseph became overseer of the land.  Second to Pharaoh.

Ephraim.  God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.

What is my affliction?  God will make me fruitful in my affliction.  I am confident.  My hope is in him.  Ephraim.

  • Jehovah-Jireh in 2010

As I look back at 2009 and ahead to 2010, I am struck by the retelling of this story,

The founder of the China Inland Mission (now Overseas Missionary Fellowship), J. Hudson Taylor, used to hang in his home a plaque with two Hebrew words on it:  "Ebenezer" and "Jehovah-Jireh".  Ebenezer means, "Hither to hath the Lord helped us" (1 Sam. 7:12).  Jehovah-Jireh means "The Lord will see to it."  And so whether he looked back or ahead, Hudson Taylor knew the Lord was at work, and he had nothing to fear.

Looking back or ahead, we have nothing to fear.

  • Joy to the World!

  • Looking Back

    IMG_4383a

I spent last night, tucked inside a little country church,  with my aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and neighbors.  The church and people unchanged, yet quite different.

You see, it was my great-uncle's funeral.  My Uncle Dobby, who "always had a kind word for every lil' young one" and "smiled with his whole face, even his eyes."  We gathered to honor him in the church that had served the Big Cedar/Clinch Mountain community for many many years.  (How many Aunt Kathy?)

Taking in my surroundings, breathing in the same "church" smell, the same painting of Jesus, the same red padded pews, the same wooden cross, I felt a spiritual connection to the faces filling the room.  I wandered to several years ago.  To faces with fewer creases.

As a child, I remember Vacation Bible School summers filled with little songs and lessons taught by the soft sweet voice of Ms. Ilene.  The funny thing about Ms. Ilene?  She was the same age when I attended my first Preschool VBS (@4yrs), as my wedding day (@20yrs) when she hugged me and wished me much happiness.

Speechless, and in tears, I sat in the pew.  Disbelief at how fast time is passing.  Slowly and gently, memories flooding back to me.

Alas the service ended and a goodbye was said.  As I walked away, I realized looking back is bittersweet.

  • Great Joy

    100_2959

And the angel said unto them, "Fear not! For, behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, Which shall be to all people. "For unto you is born this day in the city of David A Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, Lying in a manger.
